At the heart of that story was Eric Martin — also known as MC Eric — the Welsh-born rapper and vocalist whose contribution to the project helped define the hip-house era. Eric Martin was born on 19 August 1970 in Cardiff, Wales, to Jamaican parents — his mother an English teacher from Kingston and his father a Pentecostal Church minister.
Growing up as the youngest of thirteen children across Cardiff, London, and New York City, he was immersed in music and culture from every direction. He began his career as a programmer for Zomba/Jive Records before being introduced to Belgian producer Jo Bogaert through his then-girlfriend Ya Kid K — and landing a role on one of the most significant debut albums in dance music history.
Eric contributed to Technotronic’s first album Pump Up the Jam, appearing on “Pump Up the Jam,” “Tough,” “This Beat Is Technotronic,” and “Wave.” The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in the US and reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart. Beginning in April 1990, Technotronic was an opening act for Madonna’s Blond Ambition World Tour — one of the most culturally significant concert tours in pop history. Eric Martin has since been honoured with the Welsh Music Inspiration Award, recognised for his role in pioneering the Welsh hip-hop scene and his contribution to electronic music globally.
