She was a DJ before she was a pop star, a singer before she was famous, and a BRIT Award winner before most people had heard of her. Sonique is one of British dance music’s most compelling and genuinely multifaceted talents — a DJ who earned residencies at Ibiza’s most legendary clubs, a singer who wrote songs that connected with millions, and an artist who achieved something almost no one does: won the 2001 BRIT Award for British Female Solo Artist
on the strength of a record she’d originally released three years earlier. Sonique is available to book through Poise Artists.
Sonia Marina Clarke was born on 21 June 1965, in Crouch End, London, to parents of Trinidadian descent. She left home at sixteen, moved into a YMCA, joined a reggae band, and released her first club single as a teenager before falling in with the acid house scene and coming to the attention of Mark Moore of S’Express. She was the resident DJ at the infamous Ibiza club Manumission for three years and has since toured the world playing in over 40 countries.
Mark Moore also gave her her first turntables and mixer — and from there, Sonique built a career that was entirely on her own terms.
Originally released in 1998, “It Feels So Good” didn’t immediately explode. Then a Florida club DJ got hold of an import 12-inch and started playing it — the rest is history. Re-released in 2000, the album’s hit single “It Feels So Good” topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in May/June of that year. After 14 weeks in the Top 40, it became the UK’s third best-selling single of 2000. It also hit the US Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up “Sky” debuted at No. 2 in the UK. At the 46th Ivor Novello Awards, Sonique also won the International Hit of the Year for “It Feels So Good.”
Sonique’s story is one of remarkable resilience. She battled breast cancer in 2009, was given the all clear in 2010, and has continued to perform and record since. In March 2024, Sonique performed a sold-out headline show at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall, accompanied by a full live band, a string quartet, and a choir.
She remains one of British dance music’s most distinctive and beloved figures.
