Before becoming one of the most recognisable voices in European dance music, Dr. Alban was a dentist. But once he stepped away from the drill and into the studio, he never looked back — building a catalogue of eurodance anthems that dominated charts across Europe in the early 90s and made him one of Sweden’s most improbable and beloved music exports. With 16 million records sold worldwide and hits that still fill floors three decades on, Dr. Alban is available to book through Poise Artists for festivals and events worldwide.
Alban Uzoma Nwapa was born on 26 August 1957 in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria. At age 23, he travelled to Sweden to study dentistry at Lund University.
To fund his studies, he began DJing at the Stockholm club Alphabet Street, where his natural stage presence and ability to sing over records quickly attracted attention. DJ René discovered him, and after finishing his studies and opening his own dental practice, Alban took the leap into music full-time. In 1990, he met legendary producer Denniz Pop and everything changed.
“It’s My Life” peaked at number one in Austria, Belgian Flanders, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden, as well as on the Eurochart Hot 100. It reached number 2 in the UK and Ireland, and sold 1.6 million singles worldwide. NME ranked it number five in their list of Top Five Euro-Hits of All Time. The follow-up “Sing Hallelujah!” became another European smash, and the album One Love sold over 1.7 million units. Dr. Alban can look back on worldwide sales of over 5 million albums and over 6 million singles, resulting in 7 times Silver, 30 times Gold and 30 times Platinum certifications.
What distinguishes Dr. Alban from many of his contemporaries is the consistent message within his music. His debut hit “Hello Afrika” was a love letter to his homeland, “No Coke” was used in an official anti-drugs campaign in Sweden, and his verses have consistently carried social and personal weight beneath the infectious dance production. He has remained active throughout his career, competing in Sweden’s Melodifestivalen as recently as 2014 and continuing to release new music and perform internationally.
Dr. Alban brings one of the most recognisable and beloved catalogues in eurodance history to stages worldwide. His live show delivers the hits that defined the early 90s with the full energy and professionalism of an artist with over three decades of international touring experience. Available for festivals, corporate shows, nostalgia events, and private appearances worldwide. Contact Poise Artists today.
